The New Year brings a new outlook and new opportunities, but for some, this time of year can be challenging and/or isolating.
During January, over 250 events and activities were hosted by the 50 libraries across Devon and four libraries in Torbay to celebrate the “Active Life, Active Mind” programme.
The activities were aimed at encouraging people, of all ages, to try something new to exercise their mind, body and soul. They could try meditation, interactive sound games, chair yoga, blood pressure checks, dance fitness sessions, singing for wellbeing, craft for adults, Dementia Friends sessions, Torbay Climate Action, and much more.
The programme promoted positive mental and physical health and wellbeing.
POA Learning was invited to present lifelong learning to the public. Sue and Ivan - Dartmoor Learning Centre - spent time at Tavistock, Torquay, Okehampton, Bovey Tracey and Kingsbridge Libraries, helping to support the campaign. Ivan said that
“It has been fantastic to engage with so many members of the public and to be able to help people in their quest for learning”.
The feeling was shared by staff member Isobel Jarvis, First Assistant at Kingsbridge Library, who said:
"It was great to have Sue from POA Learning here and to learn about the variety of courses they offer. I believe our customers really enjoyed learning about these opportunities and we would definitely be happy to have POA Learning back at any time."
Carole Cornwall, Library Supervisor at Okehampton Library, thought that having the team at their event was a good reminder to the library users of the services that POA Learning offer:
'It was good to have Ivan here from POA learning as part of our Active Life Active Mind event at Okehampton Library. It was a useful reminder for our staff and customers to see the range of courses available for everyone to access. The free publicity resources which Ivan kindly gave us will be placed by our public access computers where some of our customers carry out job searches and CV writing'.
