During these unprecedented times, and with people safe at home, our thoughts turn to mental health and in particular mindfulness.
Everyone reacts in their own way to challenging events and uncertainty. It's important to remember that staying at home may be difficult, but POA Learning are working on several events to keep the mind active, and give people the opportunity to learn new skills, try new hobbies and gain qualifications during these uncertain times.
The first initiative has seen the team from POA Learning Eastchurch run an online art class, facilitated by Centre Manager Bev Nolker, the session, hosted on Zoom, saw local artist Graham Benham work with 12 learners, all sat in their own homes, having the chance to open their minds, show their artistic skills and learn something new with some terrific results.
The session was fun for all the family, and Bev said,
"It was a lovely couple of hours painting and learning different art techniques. I think the most important part of it was being able to see people smiling and laughing and, generally, joining in during the current pandemic.”
Hazel Hancock, one of the course participants commented,
"I used to attend art classes so it was lovely to do some painting at home. It also took my mind off the current news for a few hours. To top it all - I actually finished a picture! The tutor was brilliant."
Jill Turner, grandmother to Emily and Fraya who both took part was amazed,
"Both of the girls have ADHD and I didn't think they'd be able to focus and concentrate for two hours but the tutor was brilliant and managed to keep their attention. We're looking forward to taking part in anything else POA Learning has to offer during Covid-19."
POA Learning will be launching many other initiatives in the coming days, including a downloadable colouring book that can be printed for artists of all ages, and some great online courses to run alongside the current free level 2 distance learning courses that are currently being offered.
