After 20 years working for the same company, a learner from the POA Learning Hatfield Learning Centre has secured her dream job thanks to the help and support from one of the team, Learner Support, Jill Baron.
Jill is a regular shopper in a local supermarket and got talking to one of the members of staff, Karen, on the helpdesk. With the conversation turning to training opportunities, Jill offered the chance to come to the Learning Centre and join the IT group on a Wednesday morning and to enrol on an IT Distance Learning Course.
The following week, Karen arrived. She had little knowledge of the internet and email, and asked for advice on purchasing a new laptop so she could write up her CV and apply for jobs as the company she worked for were undergoing major changes and now was the time to start to look for a new opportunity, even though she enjoyed her job, it was time for something new.
Over the following weeks, Karen had purchased a new laptop, spent time with Jill on looking at writing the CV, using the online job searches and interview skills.
“My first interview I was quaking in my boots, it was the first in 20 years, so I was very nervous.” Said Karen, “Coming in and letting Jill know how it all went, she was able to give me some ideas on how to answer questions and sell myself so I was a lot more confident going into the next one.”
A jubilant Karen arrived at the Centre one morning with a big smile on her face, “I’ve got a job” she said, “It’s my absolute dream job, and I’m over the moon.”
After almost 40 years having her own horses, she now has secured a job in the Equestrian sector at a shop selling all manner of products for the equine set. “When I first thought about changing my job, I did wonder who would want someone at my age, but it was having the confidence to take that leap and go for something new.”
After an initial interview, and day’s trial, she ended up, unknowingly, serving the Managing Director of the new company and passed her test with flying colours.
“I’d like to thank Jill and the team at POA Learning for the support that I’ve been given through the whole process and I’ll definitely be recommending them to my friends and colleagues who are looking for any learning support.”, she concluded, “My dream job has finally been secured and I just can’t wait to start now.”
Jill was delighted to have such a positive outcome to the learning saying “From a chance conversation in the Supermarket, I am so happy that I have been able to help Karen and be part of the success in her getting her dream job.”
“To see the beam on her face when she came in was something memorable, I see this job as a being a key to helping people and with Karen it’s certainly made a difference in her life and I am so happy to have been a part of this.”
