Allergy Awareness Week...

Allergy Awareness Week kicks off on 20th April 2020 and the focus for this year is for parents and carers with babies who have food allergies.

Not only that, as hay-fever season starts to kick in, this is a great opportunity to look at what courses we currently offer that focus on allergies.

There are three main courses – fully funded level 2 – the Allergy Awareness course is split up into five units, two of which are mandatory and then you select one out of the three optional units, based on what is most relevant to you and your career/aspirations.

The qualification is suitable for a wide range of learners who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of allergy awareness. It is designed for those who wish to understand allergies, the causes of allergies and what to do in case of an allergic reaction.

The three versions are for people working in child care, for those who work with adults and those working in the social sector.

You will learn the background knowledge behind allergies, allergens and intolerances and will also gain an understanding of how allergies and intolerances are diagnosed and treated.

Following that, the next section looks at the different types of food labels and why they are so important in keeping those with allergies safe. You will then come to understand the regulations

surrounding food labelling and be able to recognise when a label is incorrect.

According to Allergy UK (, allergy is the most common chronic disease in Europe. Up to 20% of patients with allergies struggle daily with the fear of a possible asthma attack, anaphylactic shock, or even death from an allergic reaction.

A staggering 44% of British adults now suffer from at least one allergy and the number of sufferers is on the rise, Almost half (48%) of sufferers have more than one allergy (Mintel, 2010)

Food allergy affects 3-6% of children in the developed world. In the UK, it is estimated that the

prevalence for food allergy is 7.1% in breast-fed infants, with 1 in 40 developing peanut allergy and 1

in 20 developing egg allergy (BSACI, 2011).
